Burn Mosaic

Supported by Oregon State University’s Fireline Fellowship, this series of five wood-fired ceramic sculptures reference a 2023 wildfire that burned over 60% of the Andrews Experimental Forest in Oregon’s Western Cascades.

The forms reference both the charred “snags” left standing after trees are lost to fire, and topographic maps of burn areas. On the surface, the incidental marks left by flame and ash mimic the irregular patterns of “burn mosaics” – the term for the uneven burn severity that wildfires leave across a landscape.
